Our CS Project, the Garden, and Alcohol

Spencer and I have been working on our CS project over the course of the last two days, and we believe that we'll be able to finish the curriculum planning by the time we leave. The students are adorable, and it's been really fun talking with them.

After work on Friday we took a tour of Adyar Poonga, an ecological restoration (garden) site that is being built about half a kilometer inland from the beach. Mr. Joss, who is from Oroville where Kayli is going to study, is an Australian man who has been commissioned to build this 60-acre garden spot. The plant-life that they are rebuilding is amazing. They've turned a barren wasteland that was full of garbage (as most of Chennai is) into a beautiful ecological sanctuary.

On Saturday I finally got my video (above) set up and working [thank God!]. I'm not used to being the one with computer / camera troubles, so not being able to get a video from computer to camera for over a week was very frustrating. Oh, well.... it's fixed and done.

We tried to see a Bollywood movie on Saturday, but tickets apparently sell out here several days in advance for anything. Instead, we went to Spencer's Plaza (a shopping center) where I found a few cool CD's.

One interesting observation while at Spencer's:
Alcohol is very taboo here in India. The Hindu's do not drink whatsoever, the Buddhists are very light drinkers, if at all, and the Christians at ICSA are very conservative, and generally don't drink either. That being said, we saw our first slightly inebriated group of Indian men at Spencer's on Saturday. There is a large waiting section on the ground floor of Spencer's where people can wait for their friends. One man from this intoxicated group sat very near a woman who was alone in the waiting area, and began his best attempt to 'drunken woo' her. Since this behavior is, like I said, very taboo, around 50 other Indian men around the area got up and began to walk towards this intoxicated man. His friends moved the man away from the area just in time. I like the alcohol policy in India; public drunkenness and disorderly behavior are not tolerated. :-)
